Phenology is the study of the timing of cyclical events in nature, such as flowers blooming in the spring, leaves changing color in the fall, bird migration, and other seasonal patterns. Studying these changes gives us information on how plants and animals are responding to a rapidly changing climate. This requires collecting a lot of data over several years, and you can help!Learn to do citizen science by monitoring seasonal changes in twenty plant and tree species along the paved Pin Oak Trail across from the Eagle Creek Earth Discovery Center: after watching a short training video, we'll head to to the trail to monitor using paper data sheets, or download the Nature's Notebook app to upload observations. You can even set up your own monitoring project at home!
Program meets 5:30pm the second Tuesday of each month - start time moves to 4pm in November and December. Trained volunteers can also monitor the phenology trail on their own time.
Free with park admission, recommended ages 12+Trail is approximately 1 mile, paved, with some moderate slopes.
Program may be cancelled due to inclement weather - for questions contact dawn.vandeman@indy.gov or 463-325-3871
