About this event
Description
A BioBlitz is a communal effort to identify as many species as possible within a designated time. It’s a great way to connect to the environment and generate data for science and conservation! Programs are free with park admission ($6/vehicle Marion County resident, $8/vehicle out of county).
Are you an iNaturalist user? All observations in the park on May 16 & 17 will be automatically included in our 2026 BioBlitz project.
Schedule of Programs:
SATURDAY May 16th
10:30am-11:30am Phenology and Citizen Science, adult, limited to the first 25 participants. Discover how tracking plant and animal life cycles (phenology) helps researchers, land managers, and communities understand environmental change and make informed decisions. Learn about local citizen science efforts and ways to participate. Presented by Amanda Wanlass, Executive Director of Indiana Phenology
11:00am-12:00pm iNaturalist BioBlitz Hike, recommended ages 12+ Learn to use the iNaturalist app on your phone or tablet to record citizen science data - we'll review the app inside and then go for a short hike to make observations.
1:00pm-1:30pm Skunk Saturday, all ages. Meet Stinkerbell, our educational skunk ambassador.
1:30pm-2:30pm Spider Exploration, all ages. Join Southeastway Park naturalist Caitlin to learn common species, adaptations, and natural history about spiders in Indiana, go on a spider hike, and meet a spider or two up close! We’ll also make some iNaturalist observations to add to our BioBlitz project.
2pm-4pm Pond Study, all ages, drop in. Scoop with nets in our education pond to find and identify pond macroinvertebrates and other pond life.
3pm-4pm iNaturalist BioBlitz Hike, recommended ages 12+
SUNDAY May 17th
1pm-5pm Xerces Society Table - Join Susan Conway from the Xerces Society with insect-themed crafts and activities! The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats, focusing on pollinator conservation, endangered species conservation, and reducing pesticide use and impacts.
