About this event
$40 Supply Fee to the Instructor You have a photo you love — a Tennessee hillside, a view from a trip, a spot in your backyard that stopped you in your tracks. This class is where that photo finally becomes a painting. Over four weeks, we'll learn how to look at a landscape photograph the way a painter does: through light and dark, not just color. You'll start with a monochromatic underpainting — a single-color foundation that builds the value structure of your scene before any other color is added. It's a technique that changes how you see every painting you make from here on out. You'll leave with a finished watercolor landscape painted from your own photo — and the skills to do it again on your own. What You'll Learn: • How to read a photo for value (light and dark) — the foundation of any great landscape • How to simplify a complex scene into paintable shapes and layers • Monochromatic underpainting as a structure for confident, clear color • Atmospheric perspective: making your painting feel deep and three-dimensional • Composition basics — what to keep, what to leave out Supplies: • Watercolor brushes (#6 and #2 round) • Watercolor paper (140 lb cold press, 9x12 or 6x9) • Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors (10 set) • Palette (white ceramic plate or plastic), water jars, paper towels • Pencil & kneaded eraser • Optional: waterproof pen (Uni-Ball Signo 207 BOLD) • A landscape photo on your phone or printed — we'll cover what makes a great one on Day 1 Don't have supplies? A complete watercolor kit is available for purchase on the first day of class for $40. Bring cash or Venmo — it covers everything you need to get started.
