About this event
Instructor: Janice Patrignani Supply Fee $40 to the instructor
Explore a form of natural dyeing where the colors from plant materials are transferred onto cotton fabric via steam. This process is slow, but thrilling! Participants will be amazed by the fabulous colors and nature-inspired patterns that can be achieved using only plant-based materials such as leaves, onion skins, rose petals, etc. We will forage for some of our materials on the Monthaven grounds itself! Students will learn two different dyeing techniques - Nature Printing and Eco Dyeing. Students with no previous experience will learn through step-by-step instruction, and design exercises. Participants with more experience will have the freedom to explore advanced techniques. Each class will include demonstrations, followed by experimentation with tools/materials as a group prior to starting on individual projects. Participants will leave this experience with a collection of three silk and three cotton Shibori samplers that can then be incorporated into other creative endeavors such as college or sewn into tote bags, hand bound books, placemats, etc. We will also each Eco dye an 11” x 60” silk scarf and a 21” x 21” cotton neckerchief. "Textile Transformations" is a series of fabric arts classes that explore three different dyeing techniques. No experience needed and they do not need to be taken in a specific order.
