Backcountry Gourmet is an engaging and hands-on cooking workshop designed to help outdoor enthusiasts elevate their meals on the trail. This two-hour course blends practical skills with creativity, giving participants the confidence to prepare flavorful, nutritious meals in any wilderness setting.
Participants learn how to create a complete three-course meal using lightweight equipment and backcountry-friendly ingredients. The session covers stove operation and fuel considerations, selecting the right cooking gear, and organizing an efficient camp kitchen. You will also practice essential camp hygiene and safe food handling techniques that help prevent contamination and support health on extended trips.
The course includes an introduction to food dehydration and smart packing strategies that keep ingredients fresh while reducing weight. Participants also explore nutrition planning, safe food storage, and wildlife-aware waste management that supports Leave No Trace principles.
Whether you are preparing for overnight backpacking trips or simply want to improve your outdoor cooking skills, Backcountry Gourmet offers a practical and enjoyable way to boost your confidence in the backcountry kitchen. Participants with food allergies should use caution and bring their own supplies if needed.
Refund Policy for all Programs (excludes fitness)
- There is a $25 drop out fee for all programs if you withdraw within one week (7 days) of the program start date.
- Full refunds/credits will be issued if the Parks & Recreation Department cancels a program.
- All refunds have a $10 service fee attached unless the refund is due to injury.
- There is no fee switching from one program to another unless the balance of the class is different.
- After a program starts no refunds will be given unless approved by the Program Coordinator
