About this event
Description
Intro to Alcohol Markers with Erin Gillis Thursday, February 195:30 - 8:30PMJoin artist Erin Gillis in an introductory workshop to learn the foundational techniques of alcohol markers. Known for their vibrancy, smooth blending, and fade-resistant qualities, alcohol-based markers are a staple in many artists’ kits for a reason. We will be focusing on how to use both broad and brush nibs, blend gradients, layer to modify intensity, mix colours to create new colours, shade, and contrast. This is a great workshop for beginner artists, those new to alcohol markers, as well as any artists looking to brush up on their skills. We encourage you to enroll early before spots sell out!Copic markers are the original alcohol-based marker, but there are now many more low-cost varieties to choose from. They come in a range of vibrant colours that are cool, neutral and warm. These markers are double ended with a broad chisel nib on one end for filling in large areas, and a brush nib on the other. The brush nib is an amazing tool that can achieve beautiful flowing lines.
Erin Gillis artwork, Pollination, was recently awarded the Team Copic Award as a part of the official Copic Award 2025. Along with a handful of other awarded artists, Erin's work was selected from over 4,700 international entries that featured Copic brand alcohol markers in their art piece. The panel of judges included highly respected and recognized artists in the art and illustration industry, including the designer of Hello Kitty! Congratulations, Erin, on this incredible accomplishment!
**Participants are required to supply materials for this workshop. Required materials are listed below:
MATERIALS LIST:
• Alcohol based double-ended chisel and brush markers*Make sure when buying markers that they are alcohol based and double-ended chisel & brush ends (not chisel and fine end).Markers can be purchased individually or as a set (which is usually cheaper per unit). Participants should ensure they have the following marker colours for this workshop: Red, Yellow, Blue, Brown, Black, Green, Colourless blender (see below).Erin's Suggestions:Any of these marker brands can be purchased in smaller sets or as individual markers. Feel free to choose any extra colours you want, making sure you have the above required marker colours in your collection. I use Copic Ciao Markers, but they can be quite expensive ranging from $10 each. You can buy them in sets for a lot less:- Copic Ciao, Start 24 Color Set, currently on Amazon for $79.90.Here are some lower priced alternatives that are similar in quality:-Ohuhu 48 Color Alcohol Markers, Brush & Chisel, currently on Amazon for ~$30-12 Colour Dual Tip Sketch Markers by Artist's Loft at Michaels for $67.99 ($47.99 with their 40% off coupon)Note: You can provide markers from any brand or price point, so long as they fit the requirements for the type of marker needed in this workshop. Quality and performance may vary, but more affordable options will still be applicable to the workshop.
• Colourless Blender Alcohol Marker (no pigment in it)* Your colourless blender alcohol marker can have any kind of nib end. This is basically alcohol in a marker. It's handy for blending colours together or for lifting the colour if mistakes are made. All the alcohol based marker brands sell them individually. If you purchased a set, double check if your set already includes a blender marker before buying one individually (blender markers are typically numbered 0)
• Optional Materials: Prismacolor Pencil Crayons or any other good quality pencil crayons(these are nice for adding more detail and definition to the picture if desired)
Paper and standard school-grade pencil crayons will be provided by the Gallery.
