About this event
Instructor: Caroline Campion Skill Level: Any Level Ages: 12+ Medium: Fiber Total Class Hours: 9 Description: Discover the creative world of soft sculpture in this hands-on introductory class. Learn how to transform everyday objects into three-dimensional fabric forms while exploring pattern-making, material selection, stitching techniques, and embellishment methods. Students will begin by looking at inspiring examples from contemporary artists, the instructor, and past participants. Then, step by step, you’ll create your own small soft sculpture using the materials provided. You’ll learn how to build a custom pattern using masking tape and paper, choose appropriate fabrics based on form, cut out your shapes, and assemble the piece through hand-sewing. Sewing machines will also be available, along with a brief demonstration, for those who prefer machine construction. A wide variety of fillings—such as polyfil, rice, and dyed wool—will be available, along with embellishments including buttons, beads, yarn, and fabric paint, allowing you to personalize your sculpture. Students should be comfortable using a needle and thread for basic hand-sewing. By the end of class, you’ll take home a handcrafted soft sculpture and a solid understanding of techniques you can continue using to create your own sculptural fabric pieces.
