About this event
Instructor: James Robertson Skill Level: Beginner Ages: 14+ Medium: Acrylic Painting Total Class Hours: 6 hours Description: Paint Trees with Confidence Trees don’t have to be complicated! In this 3-week workshop, you’ll learn to see, simplify, and paint trees with expressive brushwork and convincing depth—without getting lost in endless leaves and tiny details. Week 1: See the Big Shapes Forget the leaves! Start by seeing trees as bold masses of light, mid, and dark. You’ll learn to simplify trunks, branches, and canopies into strong, readable shapes while creating depth with softer, lighter distant trees. Week 2: Make the Foliage Sing Turn simple masses into lively, expressive trees using scumbling, broken edges, and directional brushwork. Learn how to suggest foliage, shape branches, and create atmospheric depth with color, value, and edge control—without painting every leaf. Week 3: Bring It All Together Put it all into practice with a complete landscape painting. Build the sky and distant trees, then develop a dramatic foreground tree with expressive branches and layered foliage. Finish by fine-tuning values, edges, and atmospheric transitions to create a landscape full of depth and life. By the end, you’ll have a whole new way of seeing—and painting—trees.
