Instructor: Steven Chapp Skill Level: Any Level Ages: 17+ Medium: Printmaking Total Class Hours: 4 Description: In this printmaking class, you will work with recycled TetraPak cartons, discovering how their thin metal foil liner can be transformed into an expressive drypoint surface. By drawing directly into the foil, you’ll carve delicate recessed lines that hold ink much like traditional etched or engraved marks on a copper plate. The process reveals a surprising sensitivity in this everyday material, allowing you to create lines that range from whisper‑soft scratches to bold, sculptural grooves. Throughout the class, you will experiment with a variety of tools to explore different types of mark-making — from needles and awls to improvised objects that leave unexpected textures. You’ll also learn multiple wiping techniques, each one influencing how the ink settles into the lines and how the plate’s surface tone develops. These variations make every print distinct, giving each image its own atmosphere and character. Because the TetraPak plate can only be printed once in this way, each impression becomes a singular, unrepeatable artwork. You’ll choose the dimensions of your image based on the size and shape of the carton you’re working with, embracing the creative possibilities that come from repurposing a familiar object into a printing plate.
