Three IN-PERSON sessions June 1, 8, 15 This course will cover the history and importance of Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River to northeast Georgia, the State of Georgia, and the southeastern United States. Technical information regarding the lake, dam, and watershed will be shared, as well as the operating conditions that were part of the authorization by Congress to build the dam and reservoir. Also covered will be the “water wars” between Georgia, Alabama and Florida, which began in 1990 and are mostly settled for now. What is the legal position of all 3 states and what does it mean for Hall County and each of us? Additionally, background on the causes of recent water odors will be presented along with possible solutions. James Hawkey earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Michigan Tech in 1964, an MS in Civil Engineering (Hydraulics) from the University of Wisconsin in 1965, and a PhD in Civil Engineering Studies from the University of Wisconsin in 1966. A Registered Professional Engineer retired in several states, Jim began his career in 1966 as a staff engineer designing large municipal water and wastewater facilities. He continued work in this field as a Project Manager and Program Manager, then as VP of Conveyance Systems at a major privately held consulting engineering firm with projects mainly in southeastern United States including Metro Atlanta. Jim retired after 48 years in the profession.
