The Industrial Revolution in the Patapsco River Valley
While most see the Patapsco River Valley today as a destination for hiking, biking, kayaking, and fishing, it was once heavily developed and a key part of America’s Industrial Revolution. Few people realize that, by the middle of the 19th Century, factories lined the banks of the river from Sykesville to Elkridge producing flour, textiles, lumber, and iron products. Learn about how this small river and its unique geography became an industrial hub earlier than the towns of New England that are often cited in textbooks as the start of our Industrial Revolution.
