Records make it hard to know exactly how many female lighthouse keepers served in the United States, but National Archives show more than 140 officially served as head keepers between 1845 and 1912, with many more as assistants. The U.S. Lighthouse Society lists 518 women in its Research Catalogue, though for many only service dates remain. Most worked quietly without recognition, while a few became famous for daring rescues and exceptional service. Join us to learn about remarkable women such as Ida Lewis and Fannie May Salter, who overcame initial denial to serve 23 years as head keeper at Turkey Point Lighthouse and became its last keeper before automation—along with other women who kept the lights shining. For additional information or to reserve your spot, call the Elkridge 50+ Center at 410-313-5192.
