Computer Science Essentials Graduation: Physical Science credit College Prep: Fulfills CSU/UC lab science “D” requirement with a grade of “B+” or better. CSE — Computer Science Essentials is a dynamic, six-week summer intensive course offered through Dublin Partners in Education (DPIE) for students entering tenth grade in the Dublin Unified School District (DUSD). Designed for rising sophomores at Dublin High School and Emerald High School who are planning to pursue the Computer Science pathway, CSE delivers a broad, engaging, and rigorous introduction to the field of computer science — going far beyond coding to develop the skills, mindset, and habits of practice that students will carry throughout their academic and professional lives. This is not a coding bootcamp. Rather, CSE is a carefully crafted course that introduces students to the multifaceted world of computer science, including programming, cybersecurity, the internet, and much more. Students will grow not only as coders, but as collaborators, communicators, planners, and self-directed learners. Because CSE is a six-week summer intensive course, students will cover approximately one full week's worth of curriculum each day. Students should expect daily assessments and should be prepared to dedicate an average of 1–4 hours per night to homework and independent study outside of class time. Enrollment in CSE reflects a commitment to showing up prepared, engaged, and ready to work hard each day. Students who complete CSE with a grade of B+ or better in both semesters and receive the CSE teacher’s recommendation, may advance into AP Computer Science Principles in the fall semester. CSE is open to all students but only rising sophomores (and older) students in DUSD who earn a B+ or better in both halves and attain the CSE teacher recommendation will advance to AP Computer Science Principles in the subsequent fall semester. All other students will be enrolled just for exposure and not advancement.
