About this event
Please warmly welcome our new instructor, Alice Pang, a talented ceramic artist based in Jackson, Wyoming, who is joining us to share her extensive knowledge of ceramics and pit firing with our Teton Valley community. This special offering is an extended workshop that can also be thought of as a condensed class experience. July 11th, 10am - Noon: During the first session, Alice will demonstrate how to get some unique effects on wheel-thrown forms, students will focus on wheel throwing with instruction from Alice, as well as receive an introduction to terra sigillata and burnishing techniques used to prepare surfaces for firing. Students will then have two weeks to trim & complete their work. July 25th, 10am - 2:30pm: The second session will culminate in the pit firing itself. Students will have the rare opportunity to learn the full firing process firsthand, observing how terra sigillata, metal oxides, and fire interact to produce rich, earthy surfaces and beautifully unpredictable results that cannot be achieved in a typical electric kiln firing. This will be a longer day as the firing takes a while. Students can work on other projects and also take time to leave the studio to find lunch/coffee or take a break throughout the day. Previous clay experience is required. Emerging artists in the early stages of their ceramic journey are welcome, as are those with more extensive experience; however, a foundational understanding of working with clay is necessary in order to fully benefit from this curriculum.
