Whatever your level of fitness, or experience with dance-based classes, come and play with the sweetest group of people in Corvallis. Dance with the body you have, and be open to joy and expression, as well as movements that challenge you. I hope to inspire you to play with the sensation of fluidity in body and mind, while building strength, flexibility, stability, stamina, ease, relaxation, and exploring how much fun we can have together.
Our dance feels like effortless effort. We are dancing with meditative healing movement, some martial arts energy, and playing at the same time. We are letting go and trusting our own bodies to move and heal into greater strength, stamina, and flexibility. Fluidity and flow result from sustained effort and relaxation. And no experience is necessary to enjoy the benefits of Rhythm & Flow. Any movement can be adapted to fit students’ needs.
I bring a background in public health nursing, Black belt certification in the Nia Technique, over thirty years of dedicated practice of the technique, and my natural curiosity and geekiness in exploring how we improve resilience, strength, flexibility, stability, and stamina as we age. Everything we do in class from walking, to sitting, standing, and getting on and off the floor, can be done with grace, ease, and healthy body mechanics. Hopefully, this translates to how we live in our bodies on a daily basis — it is functional fitness with a healthy dose of fun.
According to students, I always bring the joy. Some say the class is worth more than therapy, as it helps navigate grief and loss, among other challenging life events. I previously taught classes through a program for women healing and surviving breast cancer in Austin, TX, and healing body, mind, and spirit is central to this practice. To paraphrase a recent note from a participant who began the class to help get out of some situational depression and brain fog, if the classes were not so fun and empowering, she didn’t think she would have continued. She stated she has received ‘so much joy and connection’ in restarting her journey back to health.
We are a welcoming, inclusive, ongoing bunch of happy dancers. We look forward to dancing with you and sharing the joy of movement.
