Sashiko is a traditional Japanese style of hand embroidery using simple running stitches to reinforce, embellish, and layer fabric in order to increase the durability and extend the life of a garment. Sashiko is something learned over time, through stitching and connecting with yourself, connecting with the thread and fabric as you care for it, and honoring a process that's been carried out for hundreds of years by ordinary people in such an incredibly beautiful and caring way.
In this 3-hour class, you'll receive guidance and instruction on how to get started with Sashiko in a hands-on way, while troubleshooting stitching techniques in-person. You'll also learn more about the practice in a historical and cultural context (from an outside perspective). All supplies will be provided in class, including practice fabric, but feel free to bring a pair of jeans or other non-stretchy item with a small area of damage you’d like to repair.
