About this event
This course introduces the creative possibilities of monotype printmaking, a process that produces a single, unique image rather than an edition. Blending elements of drawing, painting, and printmaking, students will explore expressive mark-making, layering, texture, and surface manipulation. Participants will experiment with key monotype techniques, including additive and subtractive techniques, trace-transfer drawing, texture rolling, stencil methods, and layered printing. Demonstrations will explore how different substrates—such as plastic sheets, glass, and other non-porous materials—interact with a range of media, including oil-based paints, alcohol inks, watercolor, and water-soluble materials. Students will develop a personal vocabulary of marks and textures through monotype printmaking. By the end of the course, participants will complete a small portfolio of original monotype prints. Materials: $20.00 Material Fee paid to the instructor for ink and other supplies on the first day of class. All materials are supplied except paper. Please bring 5 sheets of professional printmaking paper, approximately 150–300 gsm (roughly 90 lb–140 lb+). Heavier papers (250 gsm and above) are recommended for the best results in monotype printing. Suggested papers include: • Stonehenge Printmaking Paper • Rives BFK • Somerset Printmaking Paper • Fabriano Rosaspina • Magnani Pescia or a similar printmaking or cotton rag paper suitable for monotype and intaglio processes. Instructor: Nicole Patrice Dul
