About this event
This offering will spend the week learning to care for small ruminants at the Passino Goat and Sheep Farm in Fluvanna County (25-30 minutes from Tandem). The focus will be on learning about goats (and sheep) and how they are one of the most widely used domesticated animals in the world; goats provide meat, milk, and fiber, keys to sustainable living in many communities. Students will learn how to care for and make products from these animals. We will make goat cheese and other products from goat’s milk, do fiber arts with mohair (angora goat fiber) and wool, learn the basics of the goat's diet and health needs, and spend the week caring for baby goats. Activities may include meeting with a large animal veterinarian to learn about veterinary care and possible community service with goats! Note: This class takes place off-site. Students will be transported to the farm on Tandem buses.
