Description
Prerequisite(s): 15-17 years old with previous climbing experience AND concurrent registration in “Senior Youth Climbing Development Team” program.
This program is designed for youth between the ages of 15 and 17 who want to go beyond development to participate in MRU and local climbing competitions, and follows the "Train to Compete" model of Sport for Life Canada. Participants will practice bouldering, top rope, sport (lead), and speed climbing. Training is conducted once-weekly in a fun yet structured environment, with our lowest coaching ratio (1:4) in order to provide more dedicated and individualized guidance for each participant. The program goal is working on climbing projects, practicing for and participating in competitions, and striving toward mastery in movements and techniques. Sessions will include climbing time as well as drills and exercises in the MRU fitness centre that focus on specific growth areas for each athlete and will be complemented by at-home stretching and flexibility regimens. All Climbing Competitive Team members MUST be concurrently registered in the "Senior Youth Climbing Development Team" - you will need to have registered and paid for that program separately before being able to register for the Competitive Team.
The program registration fee covers climbing coaching and personal training time, semesterly baseline fitness assessments to help determine areas of strength and growth, coaching support at external competitions, and membership access to the MRU fitness centre (additional to the climbing centre membership provided with Senior Youth Climbing Development Team registration). Registration in external competitions will be the responsibility of individual participants/their guardian(s) and coaches will facilitate this registration process; this model ensures participants are only paying for events they can attend. Our goal is for Competitive Team members to participate in on-campus MRU climbing competitions as well as 2+ external competitions per program session depending upon participant availability.
Participant Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in advanced climbing movement skills and techniques.
- Develop a training plan for both wall climbing and at-home supplemental exercises.
- Compete in both MRU and local climbing competitions in a variety of disciplines.
Program Location
MRU Climbing Centre U137 with off-campus competitions.
Program Schedule
This program consists of once-weekly two-hour classes, regularly scheduled on Monday evenings from 6-8pm throughout either the fall (Sept-Dec) or winter/spring (Jan-June) session. Program time will involve a mix of climbing and fitness training time; please meet at the MRU climbing centre each session. Participants must also be registered in the “Senior Youth Climbing Competitive Team” program, which runs on Thursday evenings from 6-9pm. Double-check the specific program dates and times at the bottom of this page before registering.
Participants can be registered for the winter/spring session without having already participated in the fall session. This program requires registration prior to the first session so that we may provide a fulsome coaching experience throughout the semester.
To ensure your best experience we recommend you attend this program with:
- Active clothing and footwear (closed-toe shoes) in alignment with our facility access guidelines.
- Climbing harnesses and chalk will be provided, and climbing shoes are available for use if desired.
