We train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. This course is designed as an Integrated Educational Training Program. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routing laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. Classroom lecture and hands-on labs are integrated with contextualized, concurrent English, Math, technology, and employability skills. Students will have an opportunity for job shadowing and/or externship. Background checks and immunization records are required for optional externship. All textbooks, lab materials, tuition, and the national certification exam (1) fee are covered in the course cost. Students are responsible for the cost of uniforms, shoes, and stethoscope, which should not be purchased prior to acceptance. Course has mandatory attendance requirement.
