Painting: Old Masters Portraiture
Instructor: Donald Cronkhite
Learn techniques the Old Masters used to create beautiful portraits with realistic hair and flesh tones. Using respected masterpieces by Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Franz Hals as references, you will explore layering techniques, brush strokes, and color mixing to give your portraits a polished, timeless quality and provide a foundation for painting from photographs of your own.
Prerequisite: Previous experience in basic drawing, painting, and color mixing.

FIRST DAY:
Sketchbook 9 x 10 or larger
Drawing pencils - 2B or HB
White eraser
Brown gum eraser
On the first day of class, we will only be using these materials listed above and we will discuss the rest of the materials list that day.REMAINDER OF TERM:-Paint Clothing - Comfortable clothing that you don't mind ruining-Several small plastic cups with lids or glass jars (might use 6 per painting) small glass or metal jars for linseed oil and Tupenoid -paper towels or Paint rags (old t-shirts work!)-Fels naptha bar soap - laundry aisle at Meijer
Brushes:-3-4 Hog hair bristle variety of sizes, mostly filberts & rounds #2, 4, #6, #8-1-2 Synthetic small round brushes
Palette:-Can use small glass palette-Palette paper pad is easier for transportation
Palette knives:-1-2 Palette knives for mixing color
Oils & Solvents-Linseed Oil or Refined Linseed Oil-Turpenoid or Gamsol - 16 oz - no Turpentine, odorless Turp or Mineral Spirits
Oil paint:-Small tubes of the preferred brand: Winsor Newton, Rembrandt, and Utrecht; Artist grade, not student grade.
Colors:• Brown Madder (warm brown) • Mars Violet Deep (cooler brown) • Winsor Yellow Deep • Underpainting White ( or Titanium White) • Rose Madder • Raw Umber • Alizarine Cramoisie or Permanent Madder Deep (or Alizarine) • Blue Black (cold black) • Mars Black (warm black) • Ultramarine Blue Deep (cooler Blue) • Cerulean Blue • Cadmium Orange • Transparent Gold Ochre (or mix Cadmium Red with Yellow Ochre Pale) • Permanent Mauve (medium cool purple) • Mauve Blue Shade (cool purple) • Cobalt Violet (warm purple) • Chrome Green Deep Hue (cooler green) • Sap Green or Prussian Green (warm green) • Cadmium Red Deep (cold red) • Cadmium Red Medium (warm red)
