Instructor: Diane Roach Smith
Watercolor is a beautiful media to study! This introductory class is perfect for people who want to learn to paint with watercolor. If you have played with watercolor (or not) and want to learn more about it from a watercolor artist / instructor, this class is for you. Through exercises, projects and instructor demonstrations, students will learn about:
• Professional grade watercolor paint; properties, values, and color mixing.
• Professional grade watercolor paper; how to stretch the paper and how the stretched paper enhances a painting.
• The cycle of creating a watercolor painting from beginning to end. Professional grade paint and paper, a travel pan set and student grade paper will be provided. There is a supply list for the rest of things needed for class. A class field trip may take place during the semester for one class meeting date.

Paint
I instruct with (PROFESSIONAL) Windsor and Newton Professional Paints (watercolor tubes)
and a lot of them are transparent staining and non-staining watercolor.
There are other professional paints available such as Windsor Newton / Daniel Smith /
Holbein / Schmincke: Horadam/.
The list below is just a suggestion. Please do not go out and buy all of these if it is a budget concern.
Just make sure they are professional paints and you have a cool and warm of each of the primaries.
You will need 6 tubes of professional Paint.
These are all Windsor and Newton Colors:
Yellow/ Windsor Lemon (Cool)
New Gamboge (warm)
Red/ Permanent Alizarin Crimson (warm yellow undertones)
Permanent Rose (Pink Red)
Blue/ French Ultramarine Blue (warm), Phthalo Blue or
Windsor Blue Green Shade(cool)
Secondary Colors
Transparent Orange
Green/ Permanent Sap Green
Burnt Sienna is a good color to have in your box. I often make this color with blue and orange
Optional
Extra Blue is (Manganese Blue Hue) I like Daniel Smith brand.
Extra Pink (Opera Rose)
Pallette:
A larger square or rectangle palette with at least 8 wells to put the tube paint
in it should have a cover. Mijello is a good brand and you can get it on Amazon.
I have portable small round painting palettes for sale and a few small,
covered palettes also that you can purchase.
Paper:
I suggest using only 100% cotton rag professional paper. Arches is a good paper.
The size depends on your budget and or you comfort level for size of painting.
#140 lb Cold Press is the lightest that I use.
Other:
Pencil
Kneaded eraser
Extra fine black sharpie marker
Masking tape or artist tape
A board to tape your paper to.
