About this event
Step into the expressive world of charcoal drawing with graphite and charcoal portrait artist Tyler Hoff. In this three-hour workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of charcoal through focused still life studies, learning essential techniques for mark-making, shading, and capturing light, shadow, and mood. Based in the Missoula Valley and Big Sky, Tyler's Romantic Contemporary work explores the full spectrum of human emotion. Drawing inspiration from artists like Lucian Freud and Albrecht Dürer, as well as his own life experiences, he uses bold strokes, expressive smudging, and strong contrasts to create deeply relatable imagery. His approach emphasizes stoicism, natural beauty, and the power of imperfection. This workshop is ideal for beginners or artists looking to loosen up their drawing practice, build confidence with charcoal, and develop a stronger understanding of form and contrast through still life observation. Students will leave with practical tools for working with charcoal and new ways to translate observation and emotion into visual form. No prior experience required and supplies are provided in the workshop. Any class payments above the suggested class fee (Take a Class/Give a Class, Help a Neighbor, Sponsor Materials) are tax deductible and will be acknowledged via email for tax purposes.
