About this event
This workshop offers an introduction to the refined and highly detailed technique of end-grain wood engraving, a form of relief printmaking traditionally used for book illustration and fine art prints. Participants will explore the differences between wood engraving, woodcut, and linocut while learning how to work with engraving tools such as burins on hard wood surfaces. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, students will develop an understanding of line, texture, gesture, pressure, and rhythm in carving and printing. The workshop will also introduce inking and hand-printing techniques, as well as the expressive possibilities of different papers, including Japanese, Italian, and Taiwanese handmade papers. Guided by Taiwanese artist Mei Chen Tseng, participants will create their own engraved print while engaging with both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary approaches to printmaking. Prior experience with relief carving tools is recommended.
