About this event
Do you love to build, design, or create worlds? In this project, we will become Roman architects and city planners as we reconstruct the monuments of the ancient world and try to create a new Roman city. What did Roman cities require: a forum, a theater, an aqueduct? Students will explore how the Romans designed their cities and learn about the engineering and architectural techniques that made Rome famous. Working in teams, you will build detailed models of famous Roman monuments using physical materials or digital tools such as Minecraft or SketchUp. As we construct the city, we will also learn about Roman architecture, urban planning, and the daily life that took place in these spaces. Projects may include recreations of The Colosseum (Amphitheater), The Pantheon, The Arch of Constantine, The Hippodrome / Circus, Roman Baths (Thermae), Aqueducts and Roman roads. Students may also explore later architectural styles inspired by Rome, including Neoclassical buildings. Along the way, we will discover how Roman builders used arches, domes, concrete, and ingenious engineering to create structures that still inspire architects today. Come help us rebuild the Eternal City—one monument at a time—with Mr. Ballantyne
