INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL JOURNALING/ Sarah Moon*NO CLASS 5/20Tuesdays from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Visual Journaling is a studio course that encourages the fusion of music, poetry, and intrusive mark-making with visual art techniques such as drawing, painting, and mixed media assemblage. Students will begin creating a visual journal using an upcycled book as a foundation. The class will curate a playlist of music to fill the studio with sound, promoting conversation about music and connecting the classroom with a sense of community and joy. Through demonstrations and an intuitive process, students will learn new artistic methods to layer images, incorporate patterns, and process free-flowing thoughts. This course serves as an introduction to the practice of Visual Journaling, promoting the creativity and mental health benefits of art-making.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Have the beginning pages (at least 8) of their visual journal to continue making in their own time
- Incorporate new techniques into their art toolbox through demonstrations and discussion
- Integrate historical art concepts that influence their studio practice like automatic masking, assemblage, and intuitive drawing and painting
Resources Needed:Each student will need one old book from a thrift store to serve as the foundation for their journal. Additionally, students will need a mix of art materials, including glue or Mod Podge, paint, old magazines and newspapers, drawing supplies (pencils, pens, markers, pastels), random memorabilia for collage, and India ink. Recycled materials are encouraged to promote sustainability and creativity.
