Grades: K-8th. Be introduced to the fundamentals of chess through engaging lessons, guided practice, and friendly competition. Learn rules, tactics, and strategies while developing focus, patience, and good sportsmanship. Between classical chess boards and digital tools, this class accommodates a range of skill levels - from beginners learning how the pieces move to more experienced players refining their openings and endgames. Weekly Instruction Layout:
Week 1: Introduction and Openings - rules, setup, and general opening principles
Week 2: Check, Checkmate, and Stalemate - how games end
Week 3: Tactics I - pins, forks, and skewers
Week 4: Endgame Basics - key checkmates and pawn promotion
Week 5: Strategy & Game Play - planning, trading, and time management
Week 6: Tournament Week - Swiss-style mini tournament and review
4/15 class canceled due to district-wide fiber outage. Make-Up class is on 5/27.
Class meets in the media center on 4/8.
