Instructor: Chuck Goergen earned a BS in Chemistry from the University of Detroit. He spent his career of over 40 years at the Savannah River Site (SRS) working with nuclear materials in numerous facilities across the site. He spent a year on loan to the DOE Office of Nuclear Weapons and has interfaced with many DOE sites and liaised with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). His international work took him to Japan, Austria, the UK, and Russia. He enjoys ancient and military history as well as coin collecting. Description: The origin of SRS, history, mission, and timeline, as well as changes and evolution of the Site, will be described. Construction included five heavy-water reactors, two chemical separations areas, a fuel/target, heavy water, tritium, research, and administrative areas, as well as supporting infrastructure. The first products were plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons. The site plays a vital role in the Nuclear Weapons Complex. The basic function of plutonium and tritium in weapon systems will be introduced. SRS has the US’s only tritium extraction, purification, enrichment, and reservoir loading facilities. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has a project to build a plutonium pit production facility to refurbish the stockpile. Its role and production processes will be covered.
