Instructor: John Karas is a graduate of The University of Toledo and has taught at Harper College in Illinois. His lifelong interest in history led him to become a member of the 250 Committee preparing for and educating about the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Description: On July 4, 2026, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. But what went into the decision to “Declare” and how did it get written? We will look at that decision, as well as the Continental Congress and its role in making this decision. We will also discuss Jefferson’s role in the Declaration’s writing and the important events of 1776.
