About this event
Instructor: Tiajuana Cochnauer, a professional cultural and historical interpreter, is an invited presenter at international, national, regional and local conferences. Her contribution to telling the story of the WWI Choctaw Code Talkers is acknowledged in The First Code Talkers by William C. Meadows, published by the University of Oklahoma Press, ©2021. Description: Despite the U.S. government’s efforts to eliminate languages of Tribes/Nations, those very languages are now credited with helping the U. S. military successfully communicate during war. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is the first Federally Recognized Tribe whose language is documented to confound the German enemy in World War I. Cochnauer’s photographs of WWI battlefields in France enhance the presentations while she wears a WWI Doughboy uniform. Resources include WWI American Expeditionary Force photographs and military maps. The sessions will also demonstrate the U.S. military’s incorporation of “code talking” as an effective wartime tool during WWII.
