About this event
Instructor: Allen Riddick is an Aiken native who graduated from Clemson University in 1978 and later received a master's degree from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. He has been the Aiken County Historical Society president since 1999 and has written three local history books. He is an avid collector of Aiken memorabilia, especially vintage photographs. Description: When the coming of the Savannah River Plant was announced on Thanksgiving Day in 1950, Aiken was a much smaller and intimate town. There were a few paved streets and people seemed to know everyone in town. But everything changed with the coming of the “Bomb Plant.” This course will look at Aiken as it was before SRP and focus on how Aiken changed during the 1950s.
