About this event

Schedule: Thursdays, 4- 6:00 pm Dates: March 7- March 28 (4 sessions) In this sculpture class intensive, students will be introduced to the principles of modern sculpture and engage in plenty of 3-dimensional exploration and play. We will investigate the way that different materials can lead to different ideas, how balance and gravity affect form, and how sculpture can become a collaborative act, among other lessons. By the end of the class, students will have an understanding of the landscape of modern sculpture and the confidence and imagination to continue exploring in 3D. Join us at Kala and create dynamic works of art while diving into the creative process! Session One: Exploring Forms - Learn basic elements of sculpture such as form, gravity, space, and material Session Two: Organic to Planar - Create an organic form into a planar form Session Three: Gravity - Investigate basic physical properties that do (or don’t) hold forms together Session Four: Collaborative Sculpture  – Explore how collaboration can enable new forms and possibilities in sculpture.  Artist Bio: Ali Vaughan is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Bay Area who works between sculpture and drawing. Her work investigates the confluence of geology and the body, and the complicated intersections of memory and family history. She has exhibited work at the de Young Museum, the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, the Coulter Gallery, West Magazine, and the Stanford Art Gallery. She was a metal arts resident at the Steel Yard in Providence, RI, and most recently a resident at Radio28 Creative Studios in Mexico City. Ali was a dual major and received her BA in Art Practice (with honors) and Art History at Stanford University. In her teaching, she believes that artmaking can foster resilience, focus, investigation, and self-reflection, and is interested in allowing students to explore various mediums as means of self-expression, including drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture.
