Excursion - Eco-roofs, Bioswales and Green Walls Tour

Lifelong Recreation • 1120 SW 5 AVE #858 PortlandOR  97204 Organized by Portland Parks and Recreation

About this event

Adding soil, plants and drainage layers to a building, whether that be by way of a living wall or a rooftop, helps to reduce the “heat islands” that are created in our built environments. Sunlight is absorbed by plants and buildings stay cooler in summer and more insulated in winter. These features are also beautiful to look at and they create habitat of native plants that benefit pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. We’ll tour with a city of Portland engineer, viewing examples of a green wall and eco-roof as well as bioswales and other plantings that help to mitigate stormwater runoff. Once you know what to look for, you’ll spot these structures all over town and you’ll start to see potential everywhere!

Activity Notes: Be prepared for a half mile of walking at a leisurely pace. We will make several stops. This route will be on paved surfaces and is accessible to mobility devices including walkers, wheelchairs and motorized scooters.
This is an in-person program. Portland Parks & Recreation is following guidance from public health authorities: Oregon Health Authority, Multnomah County Health Department, and the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management.
