10 Ways to Raise an Outdoors Family

Switch it Up

Don't do the same thing every time you head outdoors, as kids get bored easily. Try something new or go somewhere different with each adventure. Some fun examples include hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, kayaking, skipping rocks, tree climbing and rock climbing.

Look For Natural "Wonders"

You recognize the majesty of nature. Teach your outdoors family to do the same. For example, lie outside and stargaze as a family while you show your children the constellations. A sky full of stars is magical, and to children, magical is memorable.

Watch Wildlife

When you hear a bird chirp in the woods, look for it. When you see a squirrel run by, chase it. Bring binoculars and an identification book and allow your children to take the lead. Give them permission to explore the sights and sounds they find the most interesting.

Plan a Nature Scavenger Hunt

The best way to raise an outdoors family is to turn your explorations into a game: find leaves, acorns, pine cones, trees, birds and branches. Include the whole family, split up into teams, and see who finds the most items. You can do this at your campsite, in your backyard or along a local hiking trail.
