This class introduces Chinese calligraphy 書法 shūfǎ, the art of writing, as textual communication, visual aesthetic, and embodied practice. After a brief overview of historical context, aesthetic principles, and materials, the course will mainly consist of hands-on demonstration and practice. Subsequent sessions will build up students’ skills and mastery of the forms and structures to create calligraphy that exhibits good balance and energy, culminating in the writing of individual characters, student names, and poetry.
