Soft Pastel, Oil Painting, Watercolor, and Gouache Online with Emily Hirtle:
Learn the fundamentals and application of painting in watercolor, soft pastel, gouache and in a direct oil painting method. Discover essential techniques while practicing painting from life or from your photo references. Learn about different surfaces such as vellum, Mylar, oil paper, panel, canvas and linen and toned papers, brands of soft pastel, gouache, and oil paint. Historical and contemporary painters who worked in soft pastel, watercolor, gouache, and oil paint. Each week you will receive pre-recorded demos on how to apply soft pastel, watercolor, and gouache and at its different consistencies. Also painting in a direct method of oil paint. You may alternate between each medium or choose to focus on one. We will have group critiques and I provide individual critiques through the duration of this class. At the end of our class you will receive a Padlet PDF featuring your work and your peer’s work. Comments on your work given by me and your peers who have voluntarily commented also.For Soft PastelDrawing boardSoft pastel Sennelier and Nu PastelCream masking tapeSoft vine charcoal Suggested papers: Ingres Hahnmule,Color fix, and Mi tiennes.ChamoisTortillionsHard pink or white eraserKneaded eraserAnd your own reference photography.

For Gouache and Watercolor: Arches Cold-pressed watercolor block or Hot-pressed watercolor block or toned paper Hahnemuhle Ingres paper and choose the toned color you would prefer to work on.Graphite (Pencil)Kneaded eraser

Hohlbein Watercolor and Gouache : Colors: ivory black, terra Verde, raw sienna, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, raw umber, alizarin crimson.Hohlbein White Gouache White large rectangular palette for Watercolor Masterson Palette with red lid for Gouache (both are at Blick or Artist and Craftsman)Masking tape (Artist tape)Two cups for waterPaper towel or ClothWatercolor Brushes: rounds, philberts and flats in variety of sizesWatercolor eraser.
