Clothed Figure in Oil and Pastelw/Barbara BerryA six (6) session courseNo class on 10/3Barbara Berry

Work alongside Barbara as she demonstrates a direct and vibrant approach to painting people. Barbara will demonstrate her method of measuring for accurate proportion, massing in the major shapes and using complementary color schemes. Students will be painting the clothed model in the long pose.
This is a course for both oil painters and pastelists.Tuition includes model fees.
Materials list:
-odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol in a glass jar with lid or good airtight container
-I do not always use a medium but when I do I use Oleogel or Walnut gel by Rublev colours
-paper towels (I like Viva) and a rag
-12x16", 14x18" or 18x24" canvas panels: I am using Senso clear primed stretched linen from Jerry's Artarama. It's not expensive and it provides a nice background color. https://www.jerrysartarama.com/senso-linen-all-media-panels?trk_msg=1NHMF6R0EL64J4U8GBV2C9JBVK&trk_contact=CLAHK46J4UJ7BIVLKG1IOO6KK4&trk_sid=S6465KAC4UKHNLUERAMA9F65O4&trk_link=RMBMFBC0U27K70V13VSQCSB1MK&utm_source=listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_term=SHOP+NOW+%26gt%3b&utm_campaign=06-19-2024-everything-canvas&utm_content=06-19-2024-everything-canvas
-I also like sourcetek panels and Professional MDF Panels by Raymar

Approximately 8 brushes of many sizes used for oil paint -I use long handle flats by Rosemary or Princeton series Aspen, small to large (tiny to 1" wide) and old, worn-down brushes. For detailed work I use "Cats Tongue" brushes by Silver brush or Rosemary brushes.
On my oil palette I usually find it important to have
1. titanium white or flake white replacement,
2. a warm and a cool yellow - ie: Michael Harding bright yellow lemon and Michael Harding Cadmium Golden Yellow,
3. a warm and a cool red -ie: Rembrandt permanent madder deep and Winsor Newton permanent Rose or Michael Harding magenta
4. Ultramarine blue and Cobalt blue
*I'm constantly trying new color mixes. Today I like Michael Harding's green gold and purple dioxazine

Here's my pastel art material list:1)A small or medium set of nupastels (hard pastel sticks)https://www.jerrysartarama.com/prismacolor-nupastel-sets?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhPbQn5jo8gIVFCCtBh11UQeZEAAYASAAEgLkAvD_BwE
2)a selection of soft pastels:Each brand has its own unique qualities. My favorite brands are Terry Ludwig, Unison, Diane Townsend, Great American, and Mount Vision- it's important to have some neutral grey colors-a few darks, ie a dark blue, a dark green, a dark purple, a dark red-landscape and/or portrait colors (can be used interchangeably, in my opinion)
A few sheets of pastel paper:Uart sanded pastel paper, any size you’d like and sometimes it is more cost-effective to get a larger piece you can cut into smaller pieces. I prefer the 320 grade and 400 grade (tooth) papers.https://www.jerrysartarama.com/uart-pastel-paperOrPastel premierhttps://www.dakotapastels.com/product/Pastel-Premier-Samplers?cat=180&idsku=17120https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/32551/s/hand-book-paper-co-pastel-premier-sanded-paper-medium-grit-white-12-x-16/
Or my favorite,Lux Archivalhttps://www.dakotapastels.com/products/LuxArchivalhttps://www.dickblick.com/products/brush-and-pencil-luxarchival-professional-sanded-art-papers/?clickTracking=true&wmcp=pla&wmcid=items&wmckw=10747-1012&gclid=Cj0KCQiA47GNBhDrARIsAKfZ2rDu5YEZt6lib1tc5iTes5sKtrERzmAwNCx2qf-_zuYwE417tVTZgZsaAtJlEALw_wcB
* the above are the surfaces I prefer because they can accept an underpainting -with water or isopropyl alcohol
Please bring these additional items:A hard smooth panel on which to tape your paper (can be a smooth piece of cardboard)Tape to secure paper to panel (masking tape is OK and artist tape is even better)Some people like to blend colors with a small piece of styrofoam pipe insulation or pastel/charcoal blending sticks made of rolled up paper,https://www.jerrysartarama.com/creative-mark-complete-blending-set
