Autumn Botanical Art in Graphite & Watercolorw/Margaret SaylorNovember 1610:00 am - 4:00 pmDescription:Drawing inspiration from fall flowers and foliage, learn how to build a botanical artwork using graphite and watercolor on paper OR calfskin vellum*.
Explore the features of these two contrasting mediums and see how they elevate your piece when combined to achieve luminescent color, dynamic shading, and fine details quintessential to botanical illustration. Margaret Saylor guides you through the process in this class, which is suited for intermediate artists looking to expand their skills.
Materials:• a wide range of pencil hardnesses, preferably 6H, 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B … or a set of whatever you have. They can be wood pencils or leads with a holder.• sharpener for your pencils• erasers: MonoZero by Tombow; a clean kneaded eraser• paper: you’ll need a sketchbook or sketchpad with decent paper, such as a Stillman & Bern Zeta series or something with hot-pressed watercolor paper in it; and a few pieces of hot-pressed watercolor paper on which to work up your final drawing/painting (size determined by your subject)tracing paper• transfer method of choice (light pad, graphite transfer sheet)• watercolors; your favorite palette of colors• a porcelain palette for mixing• brush: a #4 Kolinsky sable brush (Raphael 8408 or DaVinci Maestro long point) and a 00 Kolinsky sable brush
*if the student would like to work on vellum, small sheets will be available to purchase from the instructor for $30 per 5 x 7 inch piece.
