Camping in Lake Tahoe: The Best Backpacking Trails

4. Tahoe Rim Trail: Around Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Rim Trail forms a continuous loop around Lake Tahoe, crossing through parts of the Sierra Nevada and Carson ranges in both California and Nevada. It also shares a 50-mile chunk of the Pacific Crest Trail.

As is typical of long distance hikes, this one includes some remote wilderness, while other sections near towns are popular with mountain bikers and day hikers. Completing the Tahoe Rim Trail is an accomplishment, whether done all at once or little at a time.

The must-know: Hiking the full 165 miles is daunting for most people, but taking it one section at a time makes this trail doable for those looking to explore alternative camping in Lake Tahoe.

The route: Look for Mount Rose Campground and Tahoe State Recreation Area, both of which are located on the Tahoe Rim Trail.

These four trails are a great way to experience camping in Lake Tahoe like never before. With dramatic views, high alpine lakes and pristine wilderness trails, you'll be excited to get up and hike every morning.
