Jackson Ward was known by many names including the “Birthplace of Black Entrepreneurship, Black Wall Street”, “The Harlem of the South”, and “The Birthplace of Black Capitalism”. In the early 1900s, it was a prosperous Black community where the first Black-owned bank was founded and the first Black woman founded and presided over another bank. Over 300 Black-owned businesses prospered including newspapers, insurance companies, stores, theaters, insurance companies, medical, dental, law offices, restaurants, hotels, funeral parlors, schools, social and fraternal organizations, and real estate businesses were all located in the Ward to serve the community. The speaker will be Faithe Norrell, Cultural Heritage Specialist at BHMVA.
