Description
How the Civil War Forged the Modern American ThanksgivingThis fun and educational talk covers the complete history of one of America’s most beloved holidays – Thanksgiving. It traces how an informal harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, was eventually transformed into a holiday celebrated throughout our nation in public pageantry and in cherished family get-togethers. The presentation focuses on the role the Civil War played in creating the modern Thanksgiving as a means of developing a new national for our country. The presentation explains the ways in which pro-Union and abolition forces in the decades leading up to the Civil War increasingly used the symbolism of the Pilgrim’s Thanksgiving to advance the cause of a unified, free America. Presented by Bradford Stone.
