Mary Philbin, Conrad Veidt. In 17th Century France, a nobleman is killed and his son is disfigured by carving a permanent smile in his face. The rebels responsible are expelled and a search is begun for the missing boy. A blind girl (Philbin) grows up in exile with the boy Gwynplaine (Veidt) as they tour the country.
