QPR (Question-Persuade-Refer) Gatekeeper Training is a community-focused, nationally-recognized, suicide prevention program, that strives to educate a community about suicide and the resources available for those needing professional help. Any person who is in a position to notice that another individual is distressed and needs help is a “gatekeeper.”Like CPR, QPR is a simple process that anyone can be trained to use, to help prevent a suicidal act. Participants learn how to recognize the warning signs for someone who may be at risk for suicide, and then get them to appropriate help. Taught by Alan Rasmussen, Prevention Manager for Encompass Community Supports (formerly known as Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services).
QPR Gatekeeper Training is open to the public and provides guidelines about the known warning signs of a suicide crisis: expressions of hopelessness, depression, giving away prized possessions, talking of suicide, securing lethal means, and then teaches how to respond.
Learning Objectives:
• How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal• How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide• The common causes of suicidal behavior• The warning signs of suicide• How to get help for someone in crisis
