Description
Course DescriptionPainting/Beginners (Introduction to Painting) is a three-part traditional course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of traditional oil painting. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of the complex medium of oil and acrylic paint through progressive exercises. Students will learn how to handle paint, mix colors, organize the picture plane, and develop observational skills. Students will work primarily from still life set-ups. Note: While not required, it is highly recommended that you take a basic drawing class prior to taking this class. The focus of this course is on Representational Painting which assumes you have a basic understanding of foundational drawing skills.
Part One of this course will focus on Grisaille (Black & White) painting.For Both Oil Painters and Acrylic Painters For the first day of class, please have the following. On the first day of class you will be instructed on which additional canvases you will need to purchase:
One Canvas Board 8” x 10” and one Canvas Board 11” x 14” (Note: You might buy several canvas boards and use them for all the painting exercises during this term because they are less expensive than the stretched canvases.)Ebony or HB pencilSketchbookOne roll of Masking Tape12-inch Ruler
For Oil Painters (Oil Painting Material)(Unless otherwise stated, please have these items with you for the first day of class.)

Oil Paints (Tube size 37 ml unless otherwise stated)Titanium While (size 150 ml)Mars Black
Additional Oil Paint Material (Required for week 1)• Liquin Orignal• Tupernoid Natural (For Cleaning Brushes – Optional)• Gamsol Solvent• Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank• 2 jars with lids (mason jars – You do not need these jars for the first day of class.• Master’s Brush Cleaner (Soap)• Medal Painting Palette Knife (for mixing) - You do not need these jars for the first day of class.• Disposable Paper Palette• Masterson Palette Seal (Blue colored lid for oil painting)• Rags to clean brushes• Art Bin Storage Box (or a box or bag to hold and carry all painting materials)
For Acrylic Painters (Acrylic Painting Material)
- Bristle Acrylic Paint Brushes (Same as Oil Paint Brushes)- Acrylic Paints – Same as Oil Paints with the exceptions listed below:• All tube size 60 ml except for Titanium White, which should be 150 ml.
Additional Acrylic Paint MaterialMatt Gel Medium 250mlMasterson Painter’s Pal Sta-Wet Palette (with acrylic palette paper and Sta-Wet Sponge) (Red colored lid)Master’s Brush Cleaner (Soap)Rags to clean brushesJar to hold water (We actually have plastic containers at the art center, so no need to bring a jar.)Art Bin Storage Box (or a box or bag to hold and carry all painting materials)A small spray bottle to fill with water. (This will help to keep the acrylic paint moist. You can purchase these spray bottles at Blick’s Art Supply store or any grocery store.)
