$30 MODEL FEE DUE AT FIRST CLASS
Sharpen your portrait skills in this class with Mary Jane Ward.
Study the portrait from life, and learn helpful tools for achieving a likeness. Students will watch instructor demonstrations in graphite, charcoal, and oils, and receive one on one feedback on their work throughout the class. Students will work at their own pace and draw or paint in the medium of their choice.
All levels of experience welcome, though some experience with drawing is recommended.
Materials list for students:
Beginners are encouraged to start with drawing in graphite on white paper.
Students may bring the drawing or painting supplies of their choice. For ideas of what I often use, here is a list.
General studio tools:Artist tapeSmall travel mirror or black mirror Bamboo skewer or thin knitting needlePaper towels (Viva or blue shop towels)
Recommended supplies for drawing:Drawing BoardArtist tapeDrawing paper. I like Strathmore 400 series Drawing Paper, Strathmore Toned Tan, or Legion Paper Stonehenge White or Stonehenge Colors. 11” x 14” or largerPencils (4B, 2B, HB, 2H) Charcoal (vine charcoal and/or General’s Charcoal pencils in a range of soft to hard)Kneaded eraserWhite clickable eraserSandpaper or sharpenerWhite chalk pencil if you plan to work on toned paper
Recommended supplies for oil painting: 8”x 10”, 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” canvas, panel, or prepared paperBrushes - be sure to bring one or two brushes that can be used for detail, as well as some medium sizes and a larger flat brush for filling in large areas.Metal palette knife PaletteMedium - I use oleogel (available from Natural Pigments). Linseed oil or Gamblin solvent-free gel is recommended as an alternativeGamsol or other odorless mineral spirits in a brush cleaner or jar with reliable lid.Rag and/or paper towels (Viva or blue shop towels are best).
Oil colors recommended list: raw umber, burnt umber, ivory black, titanium white, ultramarine blue, kings blue, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, raw sienna.
