Lab Fee $20.00 | Instructor: 2024 CAC Artist in Residence Grace JohnsonDescriptionBotanical Printmaking is a natural dyeing and contact printing technique that uses leaves, flowers, and other plant materials to create one-of-a-kind permanent patterns and colors on natural fabric. In this class, students will learn and practice the fundamentals of botanical printmaking on silk and silk-cotton or linen fabrics, and will be encouraged to complete a final project that can be worn, displayed, and/or used as a functional item. Students will learn: - how to prepare and mordant fabric for printmaking - how to identify, forage/grow, and use strong-printing foliage, flowers and other natural material - how to create dye baths from common (and not so common) natural dye matter; how to shift colors- how to use barriers and dye blankets- how to bundle, roll, and steam or boil fabric Class will provide - two (2) habotai silk scarf blanks for printing- fabric for testing/sampling dyes and printing- all materials and equipment for bundling and steaming- foliage NoteStudents will be encouraged to bring their own foliage/flowers as well as natural fabrics from home and/or sourced from thrift stores. Students will be able to purchase additional blank scarves/fabric from instructor.
