About this event

Description

Painting: Advanced Watercolor — Level 3
Instructor: Diane Roach Smith

This class is for the watercolor student who already has a solid background and experience with watercolor painting regarding values, color mixing, paint properties as well as knowledge of watercolor paper and supplies. There will be individual help in a friendly atmosphere, while building on the foundations you know and continuing to learn at a more advanced level. In this class we will explore:

• Unique subject matter and how to make a creative painting

• Turning a Photograph into a piece of Art

• Mixed Media and Collage

• Abstract and Realism

Independent study is encouraged and all students will be responsible for their own references. It is highly recommended that all the students use professional paints as well as professional 100% Cotton Rag Watercolor Paper.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Watercolor Intro Part 1, Intro Part 2 and Level 1 classes w/Diane Smith or an equivalent of 4 or more semesters of watercolor training. There is a materials list for this class; students are required to bring all materials. A class field trip may take place during the semester for one class meeting date.

Suggested Materials List1 Hake brush to use for washes 1"1 Round #12 or larger soft animal hair or synthetic brush 1 Round #8 soft animal hair or synthetic brush1 flat 1/2 brushBrushes are very personal and I hesitate suggesting too many different kinds, you will see me use different brushes in class.
I instruct with (PROFESSIONAL)watercolor tubes and a lot of them are transparent staining and non-staining watercolor. The list below is just a suggestion. Please do not go out and buy all these if it is a budget concern. Just make sure they are professional and you have a cool and warm of each of the primaries.I instruct this class with Windsor and Newton Professional Paints, I also use Hobien, as well as Daniel SmithThere are other professional paints available.
Windsor Newton / Daniel Smith / Holbein/ Schmincke: Horadam/You will need a Cool and a Warm of the Primaries here are some Suggestions; These are Windsor and Newton Colors;Yellow/ Windsor Lemon (Cool) New Gamboge (warm)Red/ Perm Alizarin Crimson (warm yellow undertones) Perm Rose(Pink Red)Blue/ French Ultramarine Blue (warm) Phthalo Blue orWindsor Blue Green Shade(cool)Secondary Colors Transparent Orange Windsor and Newton, Green, Permanent Sap Green Windsor and Newton,Burnt Sienna is a good color to have in your box. I often make this color with blue and orangeHere are some other colors that I like to use;My Primary Cool Yellow is Permanent Lemon by MaimeriBlu #112 Blue (Manganese Blue Hue) I like Daniel Smith brand.Blue (Cobalt) Any ProfessionalPink (Opera Rose) Windsor and NewtonLight Green (Leaf Green) (Holbien)
Yellow (Raw Sienna) Any Professional I use Windsor and NewtonA larger square or rectangle palette with at least 8 wells to put the tube paint in it should have a cover. Mijello is a good brand and you can get it on Amazon.
I suggest using only 100% cotton rag professional paper. Arches is a good paper. The size for the Watercolor paper you work on depends on each student and their comfort level budget ect.For our projects on a 10 week semester I suggest. 3 Larger sheets of watercolor paper Cold Press 140lb they do come 22 x 30If it is a shorter semester you will need less paper.
If you are doing very wet washes and you do not want to pre-stretch your paper a higher weight 260lb or 300lb are better.
You should plan on stretching the paper if you are using #140LB paper if you paint very wet.A pencil, kneaded eraser, Extra Fine Black Sharpie Marker. Masking tape or artist tape, a board to tape your paper to. Art Mask if you are inclined to use this. I like Windsor and Newton art Mask.Water bucket and a rag.
