Description
Adult. This is a two part class - part one is Beginning Cabinet Making (offered in Fall 2024), and part two is Drawers & Doors (offered in Winter 2025). In Beginning Cabinet Making, you will be challenged to make the cabinet “carcass” or box. The materials will be provided and dimensioned. You will have the option to make either dovetail joinery or finger joints for the corners, and will be responsible for layout and marking of the carcass. You will have some latitude in the number of dovetails and the symmetry of the joinery.
General Class Outline:
- Saw the tailboards and create the dovetails.
- Pair up and layout the pinboards from the completed tailboards.
- Saw the pinboards to match the tailboards.
- Fit and finish the pins and tails for all 4 corners (the completed carcass must be square).
- Create the dados for the bottom or back of the carcass.
- Fit a plywood bottom.
You are not required to take both parts of this class, but please note that if you only take Beginning Cabinet Making, your final project will consist of creating a simple rabbited top for the carcass. If you take Drawers & Doors (offered in Winter 2025), you will learn to create a single drawer (using half-blind dovetails and a frame) and a panel door (using a lap joint). Advanced students and/or those with sufficient time, will also learn to create a mortice and tenon stand, if desired. Registration for Drawers & Doors will begin on 11/7.
Instructor: Ken Ray. 8 classes. No class 10/11. Last day to register for Beginning Cabinet Making is 9/6. A materials fee of $60 will be due to the instructor by check or cash on the first day of class.
