Quick answer: Mottiv is an intuitive, comprehensive training app that works especially well for beginner and intermediate runners and multi-sport athletes. It offers personalized workouts, pace and heart-rate targets, flexible workout options, and voice coaching at a lower cost than individual coaching, though athletes who need hands-on schedule or injury adjustments may still prefer a human coach. Review based on early access to an unreleased version but is expected to be fully released to the public in early 2027.

I've been a runner for over 25 years and have seen my share of training plans and coaching apps. As an RRCA-certified running coach, I'm pretty discerning. For the past month, I've been testing the Mottiv app, and while it's not perfect, I'm pleasantly surprised by how intuitive and comprehensive it is.
Wondering if you're the target demographic? I can see this app being useful for runners of all levels, but it's especially helpful for beginner and intermediate athletes. If you're new to the sport, ACTIVE's beginner's guide to starting running can help you establish the basics. I also love that you don't need a pricey smartwatch; you can use the app's full functionality with just a smartphone and earbuds.
How Do You Get Started With Mottiv?
Once you download the app, you'll be asked to choose your target race and answer questions about your experience level and life circumstances. You can also connect your Wahoo, Training Peaks, or Garmin account for seamless data sharing. Mottiv's official website lists integrations with those platforms and others.
There are race date-specific plans, such as a marathon on a particular date, as well as a recovery phase for athletes who just finished a race or need some downtime.
Quick Tip
What Makes Mottiv Stand Out?
Unlike a paper calendar or PDF file, Mottiv's training plans can be continuously customized and adjusted. In addition to a standard daily workout, the program offers an easier option and a recovery option. If you had a tough night of sleep or are fighting off a cold, you can stay on track without overextending yourself.
Mottiv also incorporates AI features such as real-time voice coaching. Once you hit "start" on a workout, Coach Mo guides you through every stage. These prompts make it easy to see if you're on pace and include physical cues such as "shoulder blades back, focus on quiet foot landings."
The program also removes some guesswork by offering individual heart-rate and pace targets. Based on a recent race time I entered, the app told me that my Zone 2 pace should be between 8:15 and 8:48 per mile. It also lists suggested paces for races ranging from 3 kilometers to a full Ironman. The chart is only a guideline, but it's nice to have another data point. For more context, read ACTIVE's guide to calculating training heart-rate zones.
Quick Tip
Perhaps Mottiv's biggest standout feature is its ability to incorporate multi-sport training. Athletes choose the events they're training for, and Mottiv can create a holistic plan that includes running races, triathlons, duathlons, and cycling events. This is key for anyone looking to get started in triathlon or duathlon. ACTIVE's guide to training for your first triathlon offers additional context.
Mottiv's biggest standout feature is its ability to incorporate multi-sport training.
What Didn't I Love About Mottiv?
Personally, I like to run with friends or listen to audiobooks while I log miles, so I wasn't the biggest fan of real-time voice coaching. Beginner runners might find it more helpful, especially if motivation is flagging or they're unsure about pacing. You can do the workout without voice coaching, but you'll need to write down the specifics to remember the steps.
My only other gripe was that the plan doesn't automatically adjust if you miss a workout or experience injury or illness, in the version we tested. Users can move workouts or choose a recovery option, but it's not always easy to know when to make those changes. If you're injury-prone or have a lot of scheduling requests, hiring a human coach might make more sense. After speaking with the Mottiv team, this is being worked on are could be part of the fully release in early 2027.
Is the Mottiv App Worth It?
Mottiv is still in the testing phase, so some functionalities are being ironed out, but overall I was very impressed. I've paid for an individual running coach, participated in group programs, and created my own training plan, but I've never used a training app like Mottiv.
I appreciated that it's competitively priced, offering personalized workouts and extras for far less than private or group run coaching. In addition to being budget-friendly, I think it's a great option for multi-sport athletes of all levels and runners who need extra guidance but don't want to commit to an individual coach. Bottom line: Would I pay to use this app with my own money? Yes!
