Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii (February 19, 2025) – Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, a luxurious 605-room resort located on 50 immaculately-landscaped oceanfront acres overlooking Keoneloa Bay, proudly announces the Eighth Annual Bum Run event to raise awareness. In collaboration with the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life Kauai, the Bum Run aims to spotlight the importance of colon cancer prevention and early detection in recognition of Colon Cancer Awareness Month in March.
The event holds deep significance for the Grand Hyatt Kauai team, as the disease has touched the lives of multiple resort colleagues and their ohana. The Bum Run was first created in 2015 to support Diann Hartman, a cherished team member, after her diagnosis with stage 4 colon cancer.
As this year marks the 11th anniversary of my colon cancer diagnosis, the Bum Run is a reminder of hope, resilience, and importance of community. When I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, I was living an active lifestyle, ate very healthy and had no symptoms. My journey underscores the reality that this disease can impact anyone, but can be treated and even curable when caught early, which is why awareness is so important. Through events like these, we not only raise awareness but also inspire action to find a cure and honor those we’ve lost to this brutal disease. I’m deeply honored to stand with our team, guests, and community to continue this important mission.
The Bum Run will take place on Saturday, March 1, and invites people of all skill levels to run or walk a breathtaking 2.5-mile trail through Poipu Bay Golf Course. The trail features spanning views of the oceanfront setting and emerald mountains. Runners will take in the beautiful scenery and local wildlife, and potentially even spot breaching whales during the experience.
After the run or walk, participants can enjoy a post-run snack of fresh fruit, pastries and coffee. The resort will also host a silent auction featuring prizes such as island excursions, dining experiences, jewelry, and hotel packages in Maui, Waikiki, Kauai, New Mexico, and Bahamas.
Proceeds from the Bum Run and silent auction will benefit ACS’s Relay for Life Kauai. According to research released by the ACS earlier this year, the U.S. expects to see about 107,320 new cases of colon cancer and 46,950 new cases of rectal cancer in 2025. In men under 50, colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in women under 50. Studies show that if the current trend continues, colon cancer cases are projected to increase 90 percent in people under the age of 35 by 2030, making awareness and early detection vital in fighting the disease.
“The American Cancer Society is proud to partner with Grand Hyatt Kauai to host the Eighth Annual Bum Run,” said Kittrin Cade, development manager at ACS. “This event demonstrates the strength of community in fighting a devastating disease like colon cancer. Together, we’re driving awareness and supporting patients and survivors here in Hawaii.”
